Overview of Mechanism

For this project, I decided to build a pump-jack/oil drill. This mechanism is similar to the one we worked on for homework 3 and 5, which is shown in Figure 1, but with different dimensions.

This resulted in the following mechanism:

The dimensions that I selected are as follows:

  • O4B = 5 inches
  • AB = 7.5 inches
  • O4 ground = 8 inches
  • O2 ground = 3 inches
  • O2A = 2 inches
  • Px = 10 inches
  • Py = 3.5 inches
  • α = 126.5 degrees
  • ω2=10 rad/s (constant)

I fabricated the mechanism using wood strips, bolts, washers, and wood glue. The tools required to build the mechanism were an oscillating tool to cut pieces, and a hand drill to drill holes.
