ChatGPT Plugins and Claude Connectors

Apps and connectors let ChatGPT and Claude connect to external services you already use, such as email, calendars, files, chats, repositories, Jira, and Confluence.

This page explains how to enable or connect an app in ChatGPT and a connector in Claude. For full product details, use the official documentation linked below.

UT accounts, services, and data may not be connected to personal, non-UT ChatGPT or Claude accounts. This includes UT Microsoft 365, Gmail, Google Drive, Box, and any other UT-managed application or connector. Connections must only be made through approved UT-managed Claude or ChatGPT EDU accounts in accordance with UT information security and data protection policies.

To meet university security, privacy, and procurement requirements, ET AI Studio can only enable apps and connectors that are covered by an active university contract.

Box(Read Only)

Box can only search for folders and list the contents of those folders. There are no Write capabilities.

Availability can change. If an app or connector does not appear, it may not be enabled for the workspace, may require authentication, or may depend on your access in the source system.

The following connectors are enabled for Claude Science. All Claude Science connectors are read-only. Desktop connectors are built into the Claude Science desktop app. Web connectors are also available in http://Claude.ai .

How To Enable A ChatGPT Plugin

Use these steps in the UT Austin ChatGPT workspace:

  1. Sign in to http://ChatGPT.com with your UT EID email address.

  2. Open Plugins from the sidebar, or go to Settings > Plugins to browse.

  3. Install the plugin using either option:

    • Select the + button next to the plugin. If the plugin requires a connection, you will be taken directly to the sign-in and authorization flow.

    • Or select the plugin to read about it first — review what it includes and what its apps can access — then select Install plugin.

  4. If the plugin needs a connected app, connect it when prompted. Some plugins ask you to authenticate during install; others wait until the first time you use them.

  5. Return to ChatGPT after the connection is complete.

How To Use A ChatGPT Plugin In A Chat

After the app is connected:

  1. Start or open a ChatGPT conversation.

  2. Mention the app in your message, such as @SharePoint, @Outlook Calendar, or @GitHub, if the app supports mentions.

  3. You can also select +, then More, and choose the app you want to add to the conversation.

  4. Ask ChatGPT for the task you want the app to help with.

  5. Review any permission or approval prompt before allowing an action.

Before selecting Always Allow for an action, review the responsibilities described in Using “Always Allow” for Connector Actions.

How To Manage Or Remove A ChatGPT Plugin

  1. Open Plugins and go to the Installed row.

  2. Select the installed plugin to open its details.

  3. Review the plugin's included apps, permissions, and preferences from the plugin configuration.

  4. Disconnect the plugin's connected app from the plugin configuration if you no longer need it.

  5. Select Uninstall plugin to remove the plugin itself. (Workspace-installed or default plugins may not offer this option; those are controlled by workspace administrators.)

Selecting the Correct Claude Environment

Claude connectors authenticate through the environment currently selected in http://Claude.ai. Before setting up or using a connector, confirm that you are working in the correct Claude environment.

Users with a subscription license must select their UT Austin – Subscription environment before connecting or using a connector. If the Campus environment is selected, the connector will authenticate through the Campus environment instead.

To select the correct environment:

  1. Go to http://Claude.ai and sign in with your UT account.

  2. Select the button with your name in the bottom-left corner.

  3. In the menu that opens, select UT Austin – Subscription.

  4. Confirm that UT Austin – Subscription is displayed on the button in the bottom-left corner.

Always select the environment associated with your license and the type of data you intend to use before accessing a connector.

How To Enable A Claude Connector

Use these steps in the UT Austin Claude environment:

  1. Sign in to Claude with your UT EID email address.

  2. Open Claude in a browser.

  3. From a chat, select the + button in the lower-left corner or type / to open the menu.

  4. Hover over Connectors.

  5. Select Manage connectors.

  6. Select the + button next to Connectors.

  7. Choose the connector you want to connect, such as Microsoft 365 or Atlassian Rovo.

  8. Review the connector description, capabilities, and requested access.

  9. Select Connect or Install.

  10. Complete the authentication prompts.

You can also manage connectors from Customize > Connectors in Claude.

How To Use A Claude Connector In A Chat

After the connector is connected:

  1. Start or open a Claude conversation.

  2. Select the + button in the lower-left corner or type /.

  3. Hover over Connectors.

  4. Toggle on the connector you want Claude to use for that conversation.

  5. Ask Claude for the task you want help with.

  6. Review any approval prompt before allowing actions that create, update, send, delete, or change information.

Before selecting Always Allow for an action, review the responsibilities described in Using “Always Allow” for Connector Actions.

Example:

Use Atlassian Rovo to find the Confluence page about Claude at UT Austin and summarize the access information.

How To Manage Or Disconnect A Claude Connector

  1. Open Customize > Connectors.

  2. View your connected services.

  3. Select the connector you want to manage.

  4. Review settings, permissions, and access.

  5. Disconnect the connector if you no longer need it.

Claude connectors use your permissions in the source system. If you cannot access a file, channel, Jira issue, Confluence page, mailbox, or record in the source system, Claude should not be able to access it through the connector.

Using “Always Allow” for Connector Actions

ChatGPT and Claude may allow users to select Always Allow for certain connector tools. Enabling this setting permits the AI tool to perform supported actions without requesting approval each time.

Users are responsible for actions performed by connector tools configured as Always Allow, including actions that create, update, send, delete, share, move, or otherwise modify data. Before enabling Always Allow, review the specific tools and permissions involved and understand which systems and information the connector can access.

Only enable Always Allow for trusted connectors and actions you are comfortable permitting without individual confirmation. Connector permissions and approval settings should be reviewed regularly and changed or revoked when they are no longer needed.

  • Use the least access needed for the task.

FAQ

Are ChatGPT plugins and ChatGPT apps the same thing?

No, but they are related. As of July 9, 2026, plugins are the primary way to discover and install capabilities in ChatGPT. A plugin is a package that can include one or more apps, skills, and app templates. Apps remain the underlying integrations that connect ChatGPT to external data and actions (like Gmail or SharePoint). When you install a plugin, you may be prompted to connect and authenticate its underlying app, the same way app connections worked before.

Are Claude connectors the same as Claude plugins?

No. Connectors connect Claude to services. Plugins can bundle skills, connectors, and other workflow pieces together. Review the official Claude directory and plugin documentation for current details.

Can I connect any plugin or connector I want?

Not always. Availability can depend on plan, geography, workspace settings, organization policy, and admin approval.

Can apps or connectors change information in another system?

Some can. Review requested permissions and approval prompts carefully, especially for actions that send, edit, delete, share, or move information.
