Claude Guide
Claude can support writing, summarizing, analysis, coding workflows, research support, course preparation, administrative work, long document review, and other University-related tasks.
University-provided Claude access is managed through UT Austin and is separate from personal Claude accounts. This page is a quick reference, not a full tutorial.
Switching Between Claude Environments
UT Austin offers three Claude environments, one for each license type: Campus, Subscription, and HIPAA. To switch between them:
Open the Claude desktop app or the Claude web app.
Click the button in the bottom-left corner that shows your name followed by "UT Austin".
In the pop-up, you will see the available environments listed at the top. Select the one you want to use.

Environments
UT Austin Campus: The centrally funded environment available to all current UT students, faculty, and staff.
UT Austin Subscription: The environment for paid licenses, both Standard and Premium.
UT Austin HIPAA: The environment for HIPAA accounts, both Standard and Premium.

Project Visibility
When creating or sharing a Claude project, review the Visibility setting carefully.
Visibility option | What it means |
|---|---|
Private | Only invited members can view and use the project. Choose this unless you intentionally want to share the project more broadly. |
UT Austin | Everyone in the UT Austin Claude organization can view and use the project. Select this only if you want the project shared with the organization. |
If a project contains course materials, drafts, internal notes, research context, files, project knowledge, or other University work, select Private unless the content is approved and intended for broader UT Austin access.

Data Use And Acceptable Use
Before using Claude with University data, review Responsible Use , and the https://security.utexas.edu/iso-policies/cloud-services/decision-matrix#ai-services .
Quick reminders:
Do not use personal Claude accounts for controlled or confidential University data.
When controlled or confidential University data is in scope, follow the ISO matrix and UT guidance.

Export your Claude data
Export your Clade data to use in a different Claude environment
In the environment you want to export from, go to Settings > Privacy > Export data. Download the manifest JSON when the email arrives.
Open the JSON in a text editor, copy each export_url, and paste it into the browser. Each link downloads one ZIP. Do all four (or more if there are extra parts). Each link works only once, so if a download fails, re-run the export to get a fresh manifest.
Unzip the downloaded files.
Switch to the environment you want to move to and upload the extracted conversations file to a chat. Ask Claude to find and pull out what you need. If Claude says the file is too large, create a Project and upload it there instead. Do the same with the projects file if you want your old custom instructions.
For memory, open the extracted memories file, copy the contents, and paste into Settings > Memory > Start import. You may need to toggle on Search and reference chats, and Generate memory from chats. Once toggled, if you are seeing Classic Memory you will need to switch to the newer memory setting to Import.
To simply Export Claude data
Settings > Privacy > Export data.
FAQ
Is Claude at UT Austin the same as a personal Claude account?
No. UT Austin Claude access is provided through a University-managed environment. Personal Claude accounts are not covered by the same University agreements.
Where should students start?
For learning support, start with a regular Claude chat or a project for a class topic. Follow course and instructor expectations.
Where should faculty start?
For teaching support, try projects for course context, artifacts for draft materials, and research for source-backed preparation.
Where should staff start?
For administrative work, try file review, artifacts for drafts, and projects for recurring workstreams.
Where should I start for coding?
Use Claude Code documentation and the https://code.claude.com/docs/en/overview for current instructions.
