Mold Release

Mold Release Research: 3/29/2024

Research combinations of mold release. This includes: partall paste #2 wax, frekote nc 700, and fibreglast pva. We want to figure out the root of our problems with mold release and prevent it from happening in the future.

  • Try sanding to a higher grit (i.e 800)
  • We may need a "primer" layer of epoxy or Frekote FMS mold sealer
  • Are we following the directions of how we should apply the nc 700?
    • 1) Apply the 700 NC in an up and down motion
    • 2) Apply side to side
    • 3) Apply at a 45 degree angle
    • 4) Apply at a -45 degree angle.
      • By doing this it will ensure that any areas missed will be covered in one or more of the four step coating process. When Applying these 4 or more base coats, allow several minutes after each application for complete solvent evaporation (work on another section of the mold in the meantime). The film should be dry and not feel tacky (If the mold feels tacky it’s a sign that you have applied way too much of the product or you are not wiping the mold good enough after the solvents are evaporating).
  • Heat lamp (or just applying heat in general) to cure the epoxy and help with demolding
  • Recommendations from Solar Stories Discord:
    • 1000+ grit sandpaper, turtle wax, then Airtech water based mold release
