Punctuation

For marking the ends of utterances, use either a period (.) or a question mark ?

Double curly quotation marks (not straight) for quoted speech (“dialogue-type” utterances) – for all tasks except the WAB picnic, decision made on May 2nd, 2025

1. It’s important to use these encodings: For marking short quotation stretches inside an utterance, the begin double-quote (“,Unicode 201C) and end double-quote (”, Unicode 201D) symbols can be used. These can be entered in the CLAN editor using F2-' and F2-" respectively.

Commas (,) do not affect analysis, but can be used to clarify lists, appositives, or phrase boundaries

1. *apostrophes:

   1. are okay for monolingual English samples and Catalan samples

2. Do not use any other punctuation as many other punctuation symbols are used by the program to indicate particular code, such as the colon .

3. Catalan:

   1. use apostrophes (') – decision made 20231107 in Teams.

   2. use interpunct (·) for words with ela geminada (l·l) – ignore CLAN: Illegal character. Please re-enter it using Unicode standard.(86) -– decision made 20240426 in Teams.

   3. Do NOT remove dashes, transcribe with dashes:

      No, we keep the dashes in the transcriptions, removing them would remove morphological information that is needed to compute number of clitics. The pipeline will ensure the accuracy of word counts isn't affected by dashes.
