Presentation: Adding LCNAF ides to UTSA employees in Wikidata

Elliot

Edit Wikidata items for current and former employees: LCNAF, ORCID, occupations

Provide opportunity for colleagues to get some experience in Wikidata

Followed recipes outlined Linked Data for Production “Practcal Wikidata for Librarians project, wrote guide

309 Wikidata items identified through SPARQL query

Considered tangible benefits

  • LCNAF - Primo author card in future

  • ORCID

  • occupation

  • Also: employer, educated at, other IDs

Process:

Search LCNAF, if match, add, if none, add no value, didn't edit if unclear

Used tracking spreadsheet - helpful to manage and determine final edits

Takeaways

  • Some cases where data was wrong!

  • Able to fix employer errors

  • Human review and editing

  • Much data was added via ORCID batch edits, so lacked other data

  • Surprising number no longer in academia

  • Disambiguating people is hard!

  • Some things they added were already changed within months

  • Targeted properties list is helpful - balanced with more in-depth edits when appropriate

Furter projects:

  • Adding faculty who are not in Wikidata

  • Collaborating with DH

  • PCC Entity Management
