Review Processes
Faculty Annual Review
Per university policy all faculty members in any rank need to be reviewed for merit once a year. The executive committee is responsible for these reviews. Timelines differ between colleges and departments. Consult the Assistant Director of Administration and Operations in your department for a list of those timelines.
Comprehensive Periodic Review
The Department of Art and Art History follows the Provost’s office guidelines on comprehensive periodic review. Per the College of Fine Arts’ Peer Teaching Evaluation Policy, a minimum of one peer teaching observation report from the six-year period under review should be in the dossier for Comprehensive Periodic Review. Please see your department Assistant Director regarding timeline to submit materials for your review.
Materials required for review are:
CV with accomplishments from the years under review highlighted
A summary statement of professional accomplishments across the relevant areas of specialization, (EC members may request hard copies of any of your materials to review)
A one- or two-page statement reporting on and contextualizing your use discretionary funding provided to you by the endowment during the period under review. (Upon request, dean’s office staff will provide financial reports and copies of annual letters to donors to the endowed holder to help write this statement).
past 6 years worth of FARs, including the accompanying CES reports with student comments,
at least 1 peer teaching evaluation for the period under review
Your FAR will also be included.
Optional documents you can submit are the following:

A proposed professional development plan, and/or
And additional professional materials that the faculty member deems appropriate. For example, faculty members performing substantial duties in other departments or programs should provide information describing the extent and impact of that work
For faculty who hold endowed chairs or professorships, the review should also include a review of this position. The College of Fine Arts has a policy on how to conduct a review for endowed chair or professorship holders.
Third Year Review
For TT Assistant Professors Only
Each academic department will implement a full review of the research, teaching, service, mentoring, and overall progress of each tenure-track Assistant Professor in the fall semester of their third year of service to the Department of Art and Art History.
The Third Year Review is called the Mid-Probationary Review in the university-wide promotion and tenure guidelines. The purpose of this review is to provide thoughtful and evaluative feedback both to the faculty member and the department chair/school director regarding respective contributions toward satisfying standards of promotion and tenure.
The promotion candidate should treat this as the first draft of their eventual tenure dossier.
