RDG - Microsoft Remote Desktop Client for Mac

This page provides instructions for using the ITS Remote Desktop Gateway (RDG) to connect to Windows machines over Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) using the Microsoft Remote Desktop Client for Mac. These instructions assume the client has already been installed.

Configuring the Microsoft Remote Desktop Client for Mac

  1. Open the Microsoft Remote Desktop client.

  2. Open the Preferences menu and select the Gateways tab.

  3. Click the + icon to add a new gateway with the following parameters:

    1. Gateway name: rdg.austin.utexas.edu

    2. Friendly name: rdg.austin (or some other value)

    3. User account: AUSTIN\<your EID>

  4. Close the Preferences menu.

  5. Edit or Duplicate an existing RDP session profile.

  6. In the General tab of the RDP session profile, expand the Gateway drop-down menu. Select the ITS RDG gateway profile created earlier.

  7. Select Save.

Connecting with the Microsoft Remote Desktop Client for Mac using the ITS RDG

  1. Open the Microsoft Remote Desktop client.

  2. Select an existing RDP session profile that has been configured to use the ITS RDG. If no such profile exists, see the instructions above for Configuring the Microsoft Remote Desktop Client for Mac.

  3. When prompted to enter the credentials for AUSTIN\<your EID>, enter your EID password.

  4. A Duo authentication request will be sent to you for approval.

    1. The authentication request will be sent to the default authentication method configured for your EID.

    2. Passcode-based authentication is not supported for two-factor authentication with ITS RDG.

  5. If the credentials for the Windows desktop you are connecting to is different than your EID, a second prompt will appear for that user. Enter the password for that user.

  6. The RDP session will then start.
