Transfer Coursework Policy
Courses taken at other universities cannot be transferred into a UT Ph.D. program – this is something the university does not allow. However, the graduate advisor can waive course requirements in certain circumstances.
If you have taken graduate courses at another university and are interested in course waiver(s), the following policy applies:
- For all courses: The student needs to provide a transcript and course syllabus to the graduate advisor; a course can only be waived if the student received a grade of at least B.
- For core graduate courses (Kinetics, Thermo, Transport): The graduate advisor will send the syllabus to the ChE course instructor; course requirement is waived if ChE instructor deems the course equivalent. This policy applies to grad courses taken as part of a graduate program or UG program.
- For graduate electives: The graduate advisor will decide whether the course requirement can be waived. A student can only receive credit for graduate electives taken as part of a graduate program (*not* as part of a UG program).
Transfer students are not typically admitted to the graduate program. But in unusual circumstances, such as when new faculty members bring students to the department with them, these are the rules for transfer.
- Transfer students must complete 30 credit hours at UT Austin, which can include dissertation hours.
- With the agreement of the graduate advisor and Graduate Studies Committee, students may transfer up to 18 hours of graduate level coursework, which will be counted towards the departmental requirement for PhDs. Only 6 hours of transfer credit can be counted towards a master’s degree
