In the case of one’s own serious health condition, to care for a spouse, child, or parent with a serious health condition, or for the birth and care of one’s own child or the placement of a child for adoption or foster care with the faculty member, Family and Medical Leave may be requested. FML covers premium sharing during the period approved.
Modified Instructional Duties (EVPP)
Tenure-track and full-time faculty may request one semester of modified instructional duties (MID). This arrangement allows classroom teaching duties to be replaced with a pre-accepted alternative work assignment, when personal circumstances temporarily prevent the performance of classroom teaching duties, and when the arrangement is found to be in the interest of the University’s instructional programs. MID is not to be used where sick leave is more appropriate.

Title IX
Title IX is a federal law that prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex in any federally funded education program or activity. Title IX protects all members of our campus community who experience sex discrimination, sexual harassment, sexual assault, interpersonal violence (including dating and domestic violence), stalking, or discrimination on the basis of pregnancy. These protections apply to students, faculty, staff, contractors, applicants and campus visitors.
Title IX resources
The University’s Title IX Office provides information, resources, and training related to Title IX, including the following:
Mandatory reporter policies
Per state and University policy, all employees of the University are mandatory reporters. As mandatory reporters, all employees who, in the course and scope of employment, witness or receive information about an incident of sexual harassment, sexual assault, dating violence, or stalking must report that information directly to the University Title IX Office promptly.
The relevant policies are:
Senate Bill 212 (SB 212) passed during the 2019 legislative session. It is a Texas State Law that requires all employees (both faculty and staff) at a public or private post-secondary institution to promptly report any knowledge of any incidents of sexual assault, sexual harassment, dating violence, or stalking "committed by or against a person who was a student enrolled at or an employee of the institution at the time of the incident". The SB 212 penalties went into effect on January 1, 2020. For more information, see Title IX Office: Senate Bill 212 Frequently Asked Questions.
Texas Education Code Section 51.252 says that if an employee fails to make a required report, the law requires termination of their employment. An employee who does not report an incident, or who intentionally files a false report, can also be charged with a criminal offense.
How to file a Title IX report
See Title IX Office: File a Report.

Promotion and evaluation
Promotion & tenure (P&T)
Election to use combined years of service
UT Austin has a process by which faculty members hired as tenure-track Assistant Professors or tenured Associate Professors, with prior full-time academic years of service in an equivalent rank at a prior institution, may elect to count up to three of those years immediately preceding time at UT Austin toward the number of years of effective years in rank required for on-time promotion at UT Austin. See more at COE: Elected Combined Service.
Tenure-track faculty: Extension of the probationary period
Personal circumstances can sometimes keep you from achieving normal levels of productivity during your tenure-track probationary period. Fortunately, you can apply for a probationary period extension. All professional accomplishments achieved during the extension of the tenure track probationary period will be included in your promotion packet, and no distinction is made during the promotion review between those who have and have not had an extension. More information is available at EVPP: Probationary Period Extensions for Tenure-Track Faculty.
Please talk to your department Administrative Manager for more information.
Faculty reviews
All active faculty are required to complete annual reviews. See an overview of other types of faculty evaluations at COE: Faculty Evaluation > Faculty Evaluations by Track and Rank.
For information on the effects of different types of leave on review clocks, see COE: Faculty Evaluation > Faculty Review Clocks.
The following options are available to faculty for consideration of their reviews:
Impact of Professional Disruptions Statement (COE) - an optional statement that faculty may include in any of their faculty review materials to briefly document the effects that the relevant professional disruption has directly had on faculty workload and professional opportunities and the resulting impact on faculty productivity, performance, and trajectory.
Personal Circumstances Flag (COE) - For professional-track and tenured faculty only. Designates a year within the scope of a multi-year review as having been impacted by personal circumstances. These circumstances may include, but not be limited to, disability or illness of the faculty member, or acting as principal caregiver for a dependent. The notation, but not the reason for it, would be available to review committees and provide context for the flagged year.

Annual performance appraisals
HOP 5-2310 requires that classified staff and non-faculty professional staff who are appointed 20 hours or more per week for a consecutive 135 days (for example, one long semester) or more receive an annual appraisal. As a best practice, however, any employee who regularly works and is in an expected-to-continue position warrants receiving an appraisal.
