Note that the Summer Research Award is different from the Summer Research Assignment, which has been discontinued.

Award for summer 2026

The College of Education Summer Research Award provides one month of summer salary for tenured and tenure-track professors in the College of Education to concentrate on research during the summer. Awards are to be used for research purposes. Priority will be given to those preparing grant submissions due by the end of fall 2026 and to those working on other major projects due by end of fall 2026 that require dedicated time to accomplish (see below for more information).

Eligibility

Assistant professors are eligible to apply for an SRA after their third year in-rank (i.e., after six long sessions). Faculty who have summer salary (in summer 2026) as part of a College package, were awarded an FDL in the 2 most recent years (2024-2025 or 2025-2026), or who were awarded an FDA or summer research award (SRA) in the last two summers (2024 or 2025) are not eligible. Those awarded an FDL or FDA in 2023 will be given lower priority. Applicants must notify their department chairs of submission of an SRA.

Return-to-Service Requirement

The recipient is expected to return to normal duties at the University for at least one academic year (two long semesters) following the award. A recipient who elects to leave the university without returning for an academic year is obligated to reimburse the university for funds.

Application Materials

To apply for an SRA, submit the following (using Times New Roman font size 12 with no less than one-inch borders). Please submit the following as a single pdf document:

  1. Project proposal that is no longer than three single-spaced pages (references are not included in the page count). Proposal must include a detailed outline of the product of the SRA (e.g., a grant) and the deadline for submission, as well as other details such as book publisher, funding agency, type of grant etc. Please append a description of the grant or book publisher, or URLs to these.

  2. Four-page CV highlighting relevant research publications and funding.

The proposal should include a title and outline the project rationale and significance, research questions, and a research plan that clearly specifies the methods and methodology, as well as the goals and product of the proposed project. Priority will be given to proposals that outline a clearly defined, well-justified and feasible project that will contribute to the submission of a proposal by the end of fall for external funding or to provide support for a major project also due by the end of fall (e.g., finishing a book). Priority also will be given to those submitting a book proposal or a grant for the first time and to those submitting to a grant agency/organization to which they have not submitted previously (please make sure to specify this information in your proposal).

The application must be submitted at https://utexas.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_aYscUwa7WIeTXca no later than October 27, 2025 at 5:00 pm. Successful applicants will be notified in mid-December for funding in summer 2026. Successful applicants will be required to submit a 1-page brief report detailing research activities to the Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Studies by December 15, 2026.
