Windows and Application Security Updates Schedule in Engineering
Engineering Windows systems receive required security updates several times each month. While most updates are coordinated around Microsoft Patch Tuesday (the second Tuesday of the month), additional releases are common for both Windows and third‑party applications. Urgent zero‑day patches may also be deployed as needed.
Because of this, it’s normal to see three to four update cycles per month, with the bulk arriving mid‑month. We ask for your cooperation in applying the additional updates that follow.
When you see the update prompt—like the dialog shown below—please install the updates as soon as possible to keep your system secure and compliant.
Proactive installation of updates, if you desire to strive to stay ahead of the curve, on occasion.
Open the "Software Center" application.
Enter "Software Center" in Windows search bar (hit the windows-key, type softw…, launch the Software Center App)
Go to the "Updates" tab
Click "Install All"
You can continue to work while updates are being installed.
When updates are finished, they will indicate that they are installed or "Requires restart."
Select one that "Requires restart" and "Restart"
The subsequent restart usually takes a little longer than a normal restart.
If there are no updates to install, you will see an empty list.
When will my computer automatically RESTART if pending updates haven’t been successfully applied? 
Once updates are delivered to your computer—whether you’re on campus or off campus (VPN not required)—they will install automatically. If a restart is needed, you’ll receive a notification and may defer it for up to four hours. After that window, the restart will proceed to ensure your system stays current and secure.
Times:
Every Monday, Thursday, Friday -- between 1:00 PM and 4:00 AM the next morning
Every Saturday & Sunday – all day and night
