The Potential Ineligibility for Issuance of a Certificate of an Individual Who Has Been Convicted of an Offense

In accordance with Texas Administrative Code 19 TAC 227.1(d)(1), this notification is to inform you of the procedures to determine the potential ineligibility for an educator certificate if you have been convicted of an offense.

For general guidelines used in determining Texas teacher certification eligibility, please review the Texas Education Agency (TEA) National Criminal History Checks FAQs. If you have questions about what may be on your record, you may learn more by visiting the Texas Department of Public Safety website Criminal History Records FAQs.

Felonies and certain misdemeanors may prevent the State from approving educator certification.  As a service to prospective candidates for certification, a Preliminary Criminal History Evaluation is available through the state and is an evaluation of eligibility for a Texas educator certificate based on your self-reported criminal history. Texas Education Agency (TEA) staff may perform the evaluation for a non-refundable fee of $50. The evaluation is voluntary and non-binding.
