Getting started

New to the Harris lab? Do these steps in order. Each step links to the page with the details.

Some pages are for lab members only. To see them, sign in to the wiki with your UT EID, in the form your_eid@eid.utexas.edu. Those links are marked (lab members).

Your first week

  1. Read the new personnel checklist. Go to New Personnel Checklist on General Lab Business & Administrative Procedures (lab members).

  2. Get your lab keys and building access. Ask Patrick Parker. He requests your lab keys from the Neuroscience Department office and your ProxID badge access to NHB. You need the badge to enter the building and use the elevators after 6 pm.

Lock the lab door when you leave

Every time you leave the lab, lock the door, even for a few minutes. The lab must stay locked when no one is in it.

  1. Undergraduate students and research volunteers: read the KH Lab Handbook for Undergraduate Students and Research Volunteers (lab members).

  2. Do the lab safety training before you work in the lab. Go to Lab Safety Training. Then read the emergency instructions on Lab Safety (lab members).

  3. If you work with animals: do the training on Animal use training courses and programs on Animal Use (lab members).

  4. Get your computer access. Follow the User Checklist for IT Resources on Computer and IT (lab members). To use the lab file server, see KH Lab File Server (khlabfiles.clm.utexas.edu) (lab members).

If you work with EM images

  1. If you will align a series with AlignEM-SWiFT, get a TACC account. See Get your TACC account on EM Image Processing and Data Analysis. Then follow AlignEM-SWiFT (image alignment). That guide is incomplete and has older steps. Before you start, ask the person who coordinates your alignment work which steps to use.

  2. Learn PyReconstruct. Start with the PyReconstruct user guide.

  3. Prepare large image sets on the GPU server. See Zarr tools on khlabgpu1 (make-zarr and crop-zarr).
