1Password

1Password is a password manager. UT Austin provides access to every student, staff member and faculty member for free. In the lab, we use it to store and share login credentials, sensitive notes, account numbers, software license keys, and SSH keys for accessing servers securely.

Get your UT 1Password account

EID and IID: Your UT EID is your UT username, for example abc123. Your UT Institutional ID (IID) is your EID plus @eid.utexas.edu, for example abc123@eid.utexas.edu. You sign in to 1Password with your IID.

Faculty and staff get a UT Austin Enterprise 1Password account for UT work. They also get a free 1Password Families account for personal use.

  1. Look for an email from accounts@custommail.1password.com with the subject "Activate your UT Austin 1Password account".

  2. Select Join Now.

  3. Sign in with your UT IID (yourEID@eid.utexas.edu) and Duo.

  4. Your account is at utexas.1password.com.

If you did not get the email, write to security@utexas.edu.

Students get a free personal 1Password account for four years. It is separate from the UT Enterprise account. Claim it with your @my.utexas.edu email and the UT coupon code. The steps are in the 1Password for Students section of the 1Password service page in UT ServiceNow.

Student workers can get an Enterprise account if their department asks security@utexas.edu.

Install the app

Install the 1Password desktop app from 1password.com/downloads and sign in. Faculty and staff choose Sign in with SSO and use their UT IID address (yourEID@eid.utexas.edu) and Duo. If you require SSH keys for server access, the SSH key steps need the desktop app, not only the browser extension.

Shared lab vault

The lab has a shared 1Password vault. Senior lab members with a UT Enterprise account can access it to view shared lab credentials. Ask Dusten for an invitation if you have not already been added.

Student researchers do not have access to the shared vault, because they have personal 1Password accounts. In the past, the lab shared passwords with students through Stache. Now a senior lab member sends the student a copy of the item:

  1. Open the item in the shared vault and select Share.

  2. Choose when the link expires.

  3. Select Add email and type the student's email.

  4. Select Copy Link and send the link to the student.

The student opens the link and can save the item in their personal 1Password. The copy does not update. If the credential is updated, it must be shared again.
