Adding UT Printers to Personal Devices

If you are a LAITS-supported customer and need to add a UT printer to a personal device, please follow the instructions below.

IMPORTANT: LAITS does not provide support for personal devices. If you choose to install a UT printer on your personal computer, please be aware that we cannot offer troubleshooting assistance if printing fails or stops working.

 

For Department Managers

When sharing printer information with TAs or students, please note:

  • LAITS cannot control who accesses the printer once the information is distributed.

  • Please limit access to trusted users only.

  • Ensure that users understand LAITS does not support personal devices and that installation is at their own risk.

 Instructions

Obtain Printer Information

  1. Contact your Department Manager to request printer information

    1. If you are a Department Manager and do not have the necessary printer information, please contact LAITS Chat for instructions.

Add Printer Based on Your Operating System (OS)

MacOS

  1. Open System Settings → Printers & Scanners → Add Printer, Scanner, or Fax

  2. From the Add Printer dialog select the Globe labeled with ‘IP’

  3. Input the following:

    1. Address: Should have received this from your Department Manager

    2. Protocol: AirPrint (preferred on newer devices) or Internet Printing Protocol - IPP

    3. Queue: Typically blank

    4. Name: Friendly printer name, typically the same as the Queue name but customizable by the end user

    5. Location: BLDG ROOM

    6. Use: printer should automatically select driver if installed. If none populate or it shows generic, locate print driver from manufacturer, install and retry.

  4. Click Add. Configure any additional printer features (e.g., paper tray options, finishing options, accessories).

  5. Print test page to verify functionality.

Windows

  1. Open Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners → Add device

  2. Wait for ‘The printer that I want isn’t listed' and then select Add a new device manually.

    1. From the Add Printer dialog, select Add a printer using an IP address or hostname.

  3. Enter the following information:

    1. Device Type: IPP

    2. Hostname or IP address: Should have received this from your Department Manager

  4. Click Next and wait for the setup to complete.

  5. Print Test Page to verify functionality, followed by clicking Finish.

    • (Optional) from the Printers & scanners list select the printer → Printer Properties → set device rename printer to something friendly / descriptive.
