Using Microsoft Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP)

For a GUI-enabled experience, use RDP
The Windows app, Remote Desktop Connection, comes preinstalled with Windows
You will need to install and configure the UT VPN app
The target Linux computer will need to have its remote connection settings configured by MECH IT
The target Linux computer’s disk must be unlocked prior to connecting

 

  1. Connect to utexas via the VPN

  2. Open the Remote Desktop Connection app

  3. Enter the target computer’s hostname, i.e.-
    mech-d14980.austin.utexas.edu

  4. Expand “Show Options”

    1. Navigate to the “Advanced” tab

    2. Click on the “Settings…” button under “Connect from anywhere”

    3. Fill out these settings as shown in the below image

      1. The “Logon settings” should be your eID credentials

  5. Click on “Connect”

  6. When prompted for credentials, click on “More choices”, then “Use a different account”

  7. Here, you will enter the computer-specific credentials that IT shared with you

    1. You may receive a DUO authentication prompt

  8. Once connected, you should see the Ubuntu log-in screen

    1. Enter your normal log-in credentials, typically your eID
