Student Teaching
In your final semester of coursework, you will student teach (Monday - Friday, all day) in an elementary art classroom for seven weeks and a secondary art classroom for eight weeks. Think of this semester as a semester-long unpaid internship. While most students are placed in the Austin area, some placements may be arranged in other districts across Texas. Contact the field coordinator for details or any questions regarding student teaching. The Student Teaching Handbook can be found here.
Most student teachers register for three courses during their final semester:
EDC 350E (this takes place in an elementary art classroom all day M-F during the first half of the semester),
EDC 351S (this takes place in a secondary art classroom all day M-F the second half of the semester), and
EDC 370S (student teaching seminar which takes place on campus one evening a week).
This is a demanding schedule and, like a "real teacher", many outside of class hours are required in order to be fully prepared for daily instruction. Therefore, you are encouraged to ONLY register for these 3 courses during your final semester. If you are receiving financial aid, you will still qualify for financial aid but because you are paying for 9 hours (which is considered full time for student teachers) instead of 12, you will pay less tuition and your financial aid will be reducing proportionately. If this worries you, some student teachers opt to enroll in the 3 courses PLUS a 3 credit hour independent study course with an art education faculty member in order to maintain a 12 hour course load. This is an option, but you would need to contact an art education faculty member for their permission prior to registration. You should plan and register accordingly in order to complete all other degree requirements prior to your final semester. Contact your academic advisor with questions or degree planning guidance.
