File Naming Conventions

File Naming Conventions

Study images of artwork or external photos:

Always begin with object number, add brief description for images other than an overall image like detail, signature, left, verso, or install. If third party image, add any details of source like web, artist, gallery, screenshot, photographer name. (One reason these extra terms are necessary is to avoid duplicate file names in our system.)

Our preferred “delimiter” in file names is an underscore _

The delimiter is a character or symbol that separates elements within a file name. In the first example below, the object number (2025.1) is followed by and underscore as the delimiter before the descriptive term.

Condition images of artwork:

Begin with Object Number and date [yyyy.mm.dd], with series of numbers
