Match Play

  1. An Intramural Golf Match consists of one side playing against another over a stipulated round.

  2. A hole is won by the side that holes its ball in the fewer strokes.

  3. The state of the match is expressed by: so many “holes up” or “all square,” and so many “to play.”

  4. Halved Hole

    1. A hole is halved (i.e. tied) if each side holes out in the same number of strokes.

  5. Winner of Match

    1. A match is won when one side leads by a number of holes greater than the remaining to be played.

    2. If match is tied, round will extend by as many holes required for match to be won (Sudden Death).

  6. Concession of Match, Hole or Next Stroke

    1. A player may concede a match at any time prior to the start or conclusion of that match.

    2. A player may concede a hole at any time prior to the start or conclusion of that hole.

    3. A player may concede his opponent’s next stroke at any time, provided the opponent’s ball is at rest. The opponent is considered to have holed out with his next stroke, and the ball may be removed by either side.

  7. Disputes and Claims

    1. There will be no ruling committee on site to handle disputes before the next stroke occurs.

    2. If a competitor is doubtful of his/her rights or the correct procedure during the play of a hole, the player may, without penalty, complete the hole with two balls. To proceed, the player must decide to play two balls after the doubtful situation has arisen and before taking further action (e.g., making a stroke at the original ball).

    3. The competitor should announce to their fellow-competitor:

      1. that he/she intends to play two balls; and

      2. which ball he/she wishes to count if the Rules permit the procedure used for that ball.

    4. Upon conclusion of the match play, the two competitors should seek out the Morris Williams Golf Professional to obtain an official ruling on this dispute and/or claim. The ruling obtained is final.

  8. General Penalty

    1. The penalty for a breach of a Rule in match play is loss of hole except when otherwise provided.
