Add a survey to the SSG survey queue
How to add a survey to the Survey Queue for specific timepoints: enabling Save & Return Later, ordering instruments, activating the survey in the queue, and adding optional branching logic so completed surveys don't reappear.
If the survey is already set up in the queue for another timepoint and you just need to add it to a new timepoint, skip ahead to Step 3.
Step 1: Enable “Save & Return Later” on the Instrument
Before adding a survey to the queue, confirm its survey settings allow participants to pause and resume.
In the Online Designer, open the instrument's survey settings.
Under "Save & Return Later," select Yes.
Select both of the options that appear:
Allow respondents to return without needing a return code
Allow respondents to return and modify their completed responses
IMPORTANT: Scroll to the bottom of the page and click Save Changes. Settings will not apply if you navigate away before saving.
Step 2: Set the Instrument Order
The actual run order of the Survey Queue is controlled by the settings you configure directly in Edit Survey Queue (Step 3), not by the Online Designer list itself. However, keeping the Online Designer instrument list — starting from "Start Here - Caregiver Independent Surveys" — in the same order as the queue makes the project much easier to manage: it keeps the structure intuitive, makes branching logic easier to follow, and reduces the chance of activating the wrong instrument or version in the wrong spot.
In the Online Designer, the instrument list starting from "Start Here - Caregiver Independent Surveys" reflects the survey order in the queue.
Before editing the Survey Queue itself, arrange the new instrument into the correct position in this list.
Keep the following as the first 3 surveys, in this order:
Start Here
Focus Group Survey
ABS Pre/Post Surveys
Place your new instrument after these, in the position where you want it to run.
Step 3: Activate the Survey in the Queue for a Specific Timepoint
In the Online Designer, click "Survey Queue"
, then click "Edit Survey Queue."
Scroll to the timepoint you want to add the survey to — timepoints are labeled in blue.
Find your survey within that timepoint's section and click Activate.
See the image below for steps 4-6. Select "When the following is completed."
In the search field, type Encuestas and select:
"Encuestas Independientes para Cuidadores - Caregiver Independent Surveys" [Start Here - Caregiver Independent Surveys]
IMPORTANT: Make sure you select the version of that instrument that matches the timepoint you're currently editing — each timepoint has its own version, and picking the wrong one will break the trigger.
Step 4 (Optional): Add Branching Logic So a Completed Survey Doesn't Reappear
Complete this step when the following apply:
Some participants have already completed the survey, and you don't want it to appear again in their queue, but still want the survey to appear for the other participants who haven't completed it.
You don't want a specific survey to be completed by a particular participant at all, so you have marked it complete in their record (e.g., someone has withdrawn from a specific measure).
To set this up:
Still within the survey's queue settings, check "When the following logic becomes true."
In the logic text box, enter the form name in brackets, followed by
_complete, then<> '2':
[form_name_complete] <> '2'To find the exact form name, open the instrument in the Online Designer — the form name is listed directly under the instrument's display name.
Example: For the Zarit Burden Interview, the logic would be:
[cp_zarit_burden_interview_spaneng] <> '2'When finished, click Save.
Repeat for Additional Timepoints
Repeat Step 3 (and Step 4, if needed) for each additional timepoint where this survey should appear. Steps 1 and 2 only need to be done once per instrument, since Save & Return Later settings and instrument order apply project-wide, not per timepoint.
