Using the Google Translate extension

Using the Google Translate extension

The purpose of this extension is to easily translate bilingual pages of the MADR Lab wiki.

Using this extension requires that you are using Google Chrome as your internet browser.

How to download the extension?

Downloading the Translate extension is simple.

  1. Navigate to Chrome Web Store using this link, which will take you directly to a page where the Translate extension can be downloaded.

Likely, the link will launch a page that looks something like this:

  1. Click on the blue ‘Add to Chrome’ button.

A permissions box might appear:

  1. Click ‘Add extension’.

Another notice will show up to verify once the extension has been added successfully.

How does the extension work?

When you open a wiki page that is published in another language, you can use the extension to translate it into a language of your choice.

  • To use the extension, try opening a page that is published in another language.

  • Then, highlight the section of the page you would like to read. You may highlight the whole page or only a few sentences at a time. Typically, it is best to do this paragraph by paragraph.

  • Navigate to the puzzle-piece shaped icon in the upper right corner of your browser.

  • From there, select the Google Translate extension.

The extension will automatically identify the language of the text you’ve highlighted and the output language is the main language of your computer’s settings (i.e., if your computer operates in English or Spanish).

Here is an example of the extension’s function. A paragraph in Spanish has been highlighted, and the extension displays the translation into English:

There is also an option to launch the extension’s translation in a separate Google Translate tab.
