I. Introduction and Background - JV
The mechanism that I chose for my project is a six bar quick return mechanism, it has two sliding links and three rotating links. The goal of this mechanism is for the return stroke of the output slider to be faster than the forward stroke. Quick return mechanisms are very common in the real world especially manufacturing processes, a specific type of quick return mechanism, the Whitworth Quick Return Mechanism is very popular. A specific example of a quick return mechanism used in manufacturing is a shaper machine which is used to produce flat surfaces, after the cutting stroke the tool will return quickly to maximize efficiency whilst not cutting. Shown below are GIFs of a Whitworth Quick Return Mechanism and a Shaper Machine.

The specific quick return mechanism I chose to produce is based off of Figure P6-28 from the Robert Norton - Design of Machinery Textbook. The orientation of the mechanism was kept the same but some changes were made to achieve a full rotation of the input link. Shown below is Figure P6-28.
