Intro, reflecting on 2023 accomplishmentsPaloma
  • We have accomplished a lot:
    • solid start on report draft
    • digging into Alma/Primo Linked Data features and roadmap
    • building common understanding of PCC LOD work.

Work on the report draft

All
  • Shifting our report target deadline to mid 2024
    • will allow incorporation of findings from Spring 2024 iSchool capstone project Melanie is supervising
  • Paloma reached out to Devon about contributing to report - they are on board, already adding info about ISL8 at UTL, and collaborative project w/ University of FL to create a comprehensive Spanish language thesaurus.
  • PeriodO - where does it fit in our report scope? Seems somewhat beyond our focus on UTL and HRC linked data landscape
    • Reference it as opportunity to connect/collaborate w/ other linked data projects on campus.
  • Paloma added LD4 Community section and Sinopia section
    • HRC has been using Sinopia, training themselves to catalog in this editor
      • Opportunities for HRC staff to provide Sinopia training to CM staff at UTL?
      • Good scaffolding/transition for official RDA
    • PCC Sinopia affinity group is a good resource, Paloma notes Ann Marchock has been attending
  • Report will be useful for our own group as well,, honing in on areas for strategic planning, knowledge sharing, & training.
  • Where/how is UTL and HRC leadership getting info about LD initiatives currently?
    • UTL communications are ad-hoc at this point, more likely communicated up the chain if tied to grant work
    • Our group could potentially take up the charge to be a formal communication channel, and take on that role in our org
    • Since our membership here includes members of formal UTL Metadata Steering Group, we can be intentional about communicating there
  • Observing that training and preparedness for linked data seems to be missing from strategic priorities/plans at our respective institutions
    • Can we contribute linked data-related line items to strategic plans going forward?
      • Example of ArchivesSpace shared as current specific line item in plan, enabling institutional resources to be planned and allocated accordingly
  • While strategic goals and skills with specific tools/technologies are important aspects of linked data work, there is a big gap/grey zone of colleagues eagerly waiting for direction on how to actually implement (e.g. decision-making & procedural guidelines, policies, workflows, etc.). Workshops could fill some of that gap, but more attention needs to be directed to this zone.
  • Need to add Wikidata and AI sections to report in terms of technology trends
  • High level takeaways from discussion:
    • Attend to the implementation gap/grey zone raised in discussion
    • Formalize a communication role for our group to routinely share information about linked data initiatives with our institutional leadership
    • ArchivesSpace and Sinopia as focal topics for coming year, since we know there is existing institutional investment in those.

Discuss possibilities for a Wikidata workshop 2024

All
  • Could help to address previously mentioned gap of how/why to DO linked data
  • Interest in submitting TCDL 2024 proposal that repurposes parts of our 2023 workshop - deadline for all conference proposals is Sunday, March 3, 2024.
  • Will pick this up in January 2024

Action items

  • Post to listserv re: 2024 scheduling, ask for any suggestions on changes, and then set up SP-SU24 meetings via Zoom. - Melanie
  • Add outline at top of report draft document that updates overall layout and is sufficiently detailed to help us avoid scope creep - Melanie
  • Start drafting TCDL proposal, reusing Wikidata Workshop content (TCDL 2024)- Paloma
