Scavenger Hunt

This exercise is based on the scavenger hunt assignment for ARC 308 Architecture and Society, a course taught each semester by Larry Speck in the School of Architecture. Many students who take the course are freshmen and have no background in architecture. They may have done little or no research at the UT Libraries, particularly the Architecture and Planning Library.

GOAL: (as stated in the ARC 308 Syllabus - this is what should be driving the students that you will be assisting)

To collect the source material needed to study your building. You will select a building that you want to work with for the entire semester.  This may require you to investigate several options from the list provided on the following page in order to find a type of project, style, or area that you think you will enjoy.  Your first task is to complete an academic scavenger hunt.  You will be collecting source material on your building that you will need to reference throughout the semester.

CIRCULATION STAFF ASSIGNMENT:

1. Review the ARC 308 course guide
   1. Need a refresher on how to use the Avery Index? Watch this slide show Finding Articles @APL.
   2. Have any other questions? Ask me, Dan or Holly!
2. Go to the Google spreadsheet: Buildings List
3. Select 3 buildings - please, choose buildings from different time periods and places.  The idea is for you to be able to help any student!

4. Complete the tasks below:

   Task	What to use
   Find at least two (2) sources in the library that features this building (books, encyclopedias, etc)	library catalog, Oxford Art Online
   Find at least two (2) magazine or journal articles about the building	Avery Index to Architectural Periodicals
   Find at least two (2) plans, sections, or other architectural drawings of the building	aside from the images in the sources you found above, use ARTstor
   Find at least two (2) photographs of the exterior of the building	aside from the images in the sources you found above, use ARTstor

5. Send me (katiepiercemeyer@austin.utexas.edu) a file with your answers - remember  to include your name, the name of your buildings and links and/or names of each of your sources
   TIP: to include links to the books you find in the catalog, you need to get a permanent link - you will find this on the bottom right hand side of the record.
