Writing a Grant Proposal
Have a running list of potential grants
Start 4 months in advance
Hardest part is not writing, but constructing a solid argument about the impact of the grant
Not just why project is needed at UT Libraries or UT
How does project apply across university, across discipline
Need for something new?
Is it doable in the time frame?
Do you have collaborators? Who do you want to work with?
Request letters of commitment, letters of support MONTHS ahead of time (6 months)
So what?
Who benefits? - find target population, community
What are the measurable objectives? Assessment much easier if you have these
Key things to keep in mind
Create cross-campus collaboration – lorraine
Funders are looking for broad collaborations
Sustainability – unit has commitment to continue
Better to have a project waiting for a grant than rushing to meet grant
University of Texas has a 501C3 designation as we can use to submit grant
cost-sharing: we typically count staff time as cost-sharing - we have to account for and report to funding agency
indirect costs: 38% negotiated rate prescribed percentage that the University adds on > pays to keep the lights on
got a waiver for the TARO grant
58% for research grant - administrative costs, etc.
