Scheduled IT Changes - Stache Decommission Dec 2026

Subject: Action Required: Migrate Your Stache Passwords to 1Password Before December 2026

Dear CNS Faculty and Staff,

UT Austin is retiring Stache, the university's longtime password manager, and replacing it with 1Password. If you store any UT-related credentials in Stache, you'll need to move them over — here's what's happening and what to do.

Timeline

  • Stache will switch to read-only mode in mid-fall 2026 (no new entries or edits after that point).

  • Stache will be fully retired by December 2026.

  • Please don't wait until the deadline — start migrating now.

Step 1: Activate your 1Password account

Since fall 2025, UT has been sending activation invites to all faculty and staff.

  1. Search your inbox for an email titled "Join University of Texas at Austin on 1Password" or "Activate your UT Austin 1Password account."

  2. Click Join Now, then Sign in with Microsoft.

  3. Sign in with your UT EID email (yourEID@eid.utexas.edu) and authenticate with Duo.

  4. You'll get a confirmation email within 5–10 minutes once your account is active.

If you can't find the invite or your account won't activate, contact the UT Service Desk at 512-475-9400 or security@utexas.edu.

Important: After you first sign in, don't clear your browser cache until you've either installed the 1Password app or signed into a second browser/device. Clearing the cache before that link is made can lock you out and require a recovery key from the Service Desk.

Step 2: Migrate your Stache entries

LAITS has built an Excel-based migration tool that exports your Stache entries and imports them into 1Password as Secure Notes. At a high level:

  1. In Stache, open each entry you own and enable "Allow data to be read by API calls" (Options tab). You must be an Owner of the entry to do this.

  2. Download the migration Excel workbook and paste in each entry's name, API endpoint, and API key.

  3. Use Excel's "Refresh All" to pull the data, then save the results as a CSV.

  4. In 1Password, create or choose a Vault, use Import Data > CSV file, and label each row as a Secure Note.

A few things to know before you start

  • If a single Stache entry holds multiple passwords, the migration tool won't automatically split them into separate 1Password logins. If you want autofill to work for each one, you'll need to manually create individual Login items for those.

  • 1Password "Vaults" work like Stache "Folders" for organizing and sharing entries with your team.

  • If your team needs a shared 1Password Group tied to your department's Active Directory group, that has to be requested from the Information Security Office at security@utexas.edu.
