Zoom Virtual Background

The Zoom app can put a virtual background behind you, replacing the real space behind you. The app will constantly observe you and your background to try to seamlessly separate you and the background picture, which takes computing power. Therefore, not all computers and smartphones are supported. If yours is, you will find the option as described below.

Computer

To set a virtual background after you've joined a meeting, click the pointer icon next to the video button. You may need to mouse over the video window to make the buttons appear.

Tips:

Make sure you have the latest Zoom app

More recent versions of the Zoom app have better support for virtual backgrounds. With the Zoom app open, click on your profile icon and select Check for Updates.

Make sure you are well lit

The quality of your web cam and and the lighting around you will help you "stand out" from your background. If you find that parts of you disappear or blend into the background, see if you can adjust the lighting around you so that your face and shoulders are well lit.

Do not wear clothes with the same colors as your background

If you are well lit, but your clothes still blend into the background, make sure they aren't closely matched in color. Try a different background.

Try a solid color background

The Zoom app will have the easiest time telling you apart from your background if it is a solid color that is completely different from you and your clothes.
