Overview

Educational Psychology (EDP) graduate students often finance their education through a combination of employment, scholarships, fellowships, and loans. Many find work both within the University and the broader community.

Fellowship and Awards

There are several types of awards available to EDP graduate students - these can take the form of individual one-time awards, or full fellowship packages with tuition coverage and stipend.

EDP Department - these awards or fellowships are generally funded by endowments to the Department. Nomination for these awards is typically done during the application process and is automatic - students will be notified of any fellowships that require an application or self-nomination.

Graduate School / University - students are nominated for Graduate School and University-level funding by the program Area and Department.

Student Employment Opportunities

Graduate student employment at UT is most frequently in the following roles: Teaching Assistant (TA), Assistant Instructor (AI), and Graduate Research Assistant (GRA).

EDP Department Positions

The Department of Educational Psychology offers a employment opportunities primarily for students in their second year or beyond.

How to Apply for EDP Roles

Teaching Assistants (TA)s

TAs support faculty with tasks like grading, managing class logistics, and leading review sessions. TAs are not permitted to deliver course instruction. If you’re interested in a TA position:

  • Review upcoming courses in the UT Course Schedule

  • Contact your Area Chair or faculty adviser soon after the schedule is published to inquire about opportunities.

Note: TAs with official appointments will be evaluated via TA-specific questions on Course Evaluations

Assistant Instructors (AI)s

AIs are the primary instructors for an undergraduate course and are responsible for all teaching, grading, and classroom activities. Each AI is assigned a faculty supervisor for support and evaluation.

For professional development, consider participating in programs offered by the Center for Teaching and Learning.

Graduate Research Assistant (GRA)s 

GRAs contribute to research under faculty supervision and may incorporate this work into their thesis, report, or dissertation with approval. Interested students should explore faculty research interests and contact faculty directly.

Appointment Information, Tuition Waivers, and Benefits

Appointment information is available via the Workday (UT's HR system) a few weeks before each semester.
