Course Waivers

Course Waivers

Overview

If you’ve already completed graduate-level coursework that is similar to a required course in your EDP program, you may be eligible for a course waiver. A course waiver means you won’t need to retake the same content.

To request a waiver, you’ll need to submit an official waiver form (info below). It’s best to submit your request before or during EDP New Student Orientation.

To qualify for a waiver, the course you’ve already taken must:

  • Be at the graduate level

  • Have a grade of B or higher

  • Have been completed within the last 6 years

  • Duplicate the content of the course you want to waive

Note: Program and degree requirements may limit how many or what types of waivers are allowed.

Waiver Process

  1. Review your Degree Plan to see a list of courses required for your degree.

  2. Prepare your waiver materials:

    • Syllabus of course taken

    • Copy of transcript showing grade received

  3. Submit the EDP Course Waiver Request (one for each course requesting to waive)

    • Tip: Use your EID UT email address when signing into Docusign, so that you can more easily track form progress.

  4. Monitor the progress of your waiver via Docusign. Waivers require multiple approvals and automatically route to each (instructor, Area Chair, and Graduate Adviser).

  5. Save copies of any approved waiver forms, in case you need a record of them in the future (particularly students planning on obtaining clinical licensures). Approved waivers will display in your Graduate Degree Planner.

Course Waiver Limits

For Master’s students in HDCLS or Quantitative Methods, typically no more than 3-6 credit hours (1-2 courses) can be waived due to UT’s credit hour minimums for Master’s degrees. For all other programs, waivers are typically limited to 3-4 courses maximum.
