Course Waivers

Course Waivers

Quick Links

Overview

If you’ve already completed graduate-level coursework that is similar to a required course in your EDP program, you may be eligible for a course waiver. A course waiver means you won’t need to retake the same content.

To request a waiver, you’ll need to submit an official waiver form (link below). It’s best to submit your request before or during EDP New Student Orientation.

To qualify for a waiver, the course you’ve already taken must:

  • Be at the graduate level

  • Have a grade of B or higher

  • Have been completed within the last 6 years

  • Duplicate the content of the course you want to waive

Course Waiver Limits: there is not a specific course waiver limit, as waivers are dependent on many factors (credit hour requirements, licensure/accreditation requirements for specific courses, if the course was taken in EDP vs. other institutions, etc.), which also differ between programs and degrees. When in doubt, go ahead and submit your Waiver request, and contact the EDP Graduate Coordinator if you have questions about the number of courses that can be waived.

How to Submit a Course Waiver

  1. Review your Degree Plan to view the courses required for your degree.

    • For course information, you can search for the class in the UT Catalog or Syllabi Search system. Note: some courses may not have descriptions/syllabi online. If you have trouble finding information about a course, reach out to EDP@austin.utexas.edu

  2. Gather your waiver materials:

    • Syllabus of course taken

    • Copy of transcript showing grade received

  3. Submit the EDP COURSE WAIVER REQUEST FORM (one for each course requesting to waive)

  4. Monitor the progress of your waiver via the Docusign link you received after submitting your waiver. Waivers require multiple approvals and automatically route to each (instructor and Graduate Adviser).

  5. Save copies of any approved waiver forms, in case you need a record of them in the future (particularly students planning on obtaining clinical licensures). Approved waivers will display in your Graduate Degree Planner.

Course Waiver Limits

Due to the Graduate School’s credit-hour requirements for graduate degrees, there are limitations on the number of courses that can be waived on a Program of Work. This is of particular note for Master’s students in HDCLS or Quantitative Methods, as often no more than 3-6 credit hours (1-2 courses) can be skipped on those Program of Work. If your number of approved Course Waivers exceeds the credit hour limit for your degree, your program Area Chair can work with you to identify suitable substitute graduate-level classes that you can take to get to the minimum credit hours.
