Bake Out System (BOS)

Bake Out System (BOS)

BOS is used to bake out cells, crucibles, etc. and for handling some additional maintenance duties.

Body

  • Base with multiple potential ports.

  • Center column that arms branch off of.

  • Four arms, one water-cooled for high-temperature cells.

  • RGA on upper right arm.

  • Cryo pump attached on lower right side.

Roughing Manifold

  • Connects to base of body through tabletop.

  • AMV isolates it from Scroll pump and N2 line.

  • Scroll pump has viton valve.

  • N2 line has green quarter turn valve.

High-temperature Arm

The high-temp arm uses 1/4" Cu pipe to carry away heat from the rest of the arm. The Cu pipe is held in place using hose clamps and Pyro-Putty.
'Pyro-Putty' Info

  • Pyro-Putty 2400 by AREMCO Products, Inc.

  • Pyro-Putty 2400-T is the thinner used with the Pyro-Putty 2400

Mix the Pyro-Putty and its thinner in a petri dish using plastic Q-tips. Use the Q-tips to put the mixture into small syringes and apply to the desired BOS arm areas. After all mixture application is complete for the day, throw away the petri dish. Clean up all mixture flakes with IPA and cloth Kimwipes and then dispose in the trash.
Some tips:

  1. Use a liberal amount of paper Kimwipes in the mixture prep area and under areas of the BOS that will receive the mixture -- this makes clean up easier.

  2. The mixture will start drying in the petri dish while you're busy applying it to parts of the arm. Periodically mix in more thinner to keep the overall mixture creamy in texture.
