LN2 Phase Separators

LN2 Phase Separators

Phase separator shutdown (in case of LN2 or power outage)

  1. Close blue quarter turn valve in front of turbo.

  2. Spin down turbo from Varian controller, verify power is at 0.0.

  3. Wait an hour.

  4. Unplug rough pump VPI from outlet.

  5. Turn off rough pump with power switch on pump.

  6. Turn off turbo on control box.

  7. Turn off LN2 actuator on control box.

Start up

  1. Turn on rough pump.

  2. Turn on switch on left side of control box to watch pressure.

  3. Plug in VPI.

  4. Turn knob to let out atmosphere if needed.

  5. Wait a few minutes as pressure drops.

  6. Slowly open quarter turn in front of turbo.

  7. Make sure pressure only rises slowly.

  8. Start turbo on Varian box.

  9. Wait for box to say “turbo spin up” to “normal operation 56 (Echo) or 62 (Bravo).

  10. Turn on actuator on box – this begins filling LN2.

  11. Once full (indicators), can open LN2 to system.

Purging phase separators

  • This could be necessary if water gets into the LN2 lines and freezes, preventing the valves from fulling opening/closing or clogging up the lines. We’ve had to do this when the stuck actuator valve was causing LN2 to spew onto the roof and high pressures in the MBE.

  • Shut down the phase separators using the procedure above.

  • Remove Swagelok cap from drain line at bottom of the phase separator and attach an N2 line (we used 15-20 psi). Purge for 24 hours.
