Laser Standard Operating Procedure
EHS now requires all groups using Class 3b and Class 4 lasers to have a recorded standard operating procedure (SOP). This page will serve as documentation for group laser procedures and can be revised as necessary.
General Safety Procedures
All labs with lasers should have a warning posted on the outside door.
All optical tables should be grounded to prevent electrocution hazards.
Ensure laser setups are enclosed with appropriate beam stops (non-reflective, non-flammable, dark surface)
Keep clutter out of the beam path
Use interlocks with Class 3b and Class 4 lasers
Green (532nm) PL Laser
Before powering on the laser, ensure that all personnel present are wearing the provided OD 7 protective eyewear and that the iris in front of the laser is closed.
Turn the laser warning light "On" to alert personnel outside the lab that the laser is in use.
Turn the interlock key horizontal and power on the laser driver.
Slowly ramp the laser driver current to 3.3A.
Fix your sample to the vacuum chuck in the optical setup.
Only open the iris when you are ready to collect measurement data.
Close the iris when you are switching samples or finished collecting data.
Slowly ramp the laser driver down to its minimum value, turn it off, and turn the interlock key back.
Turn off the laser warning light.
