Dynamics PDR Questions from audience

Kayla
Nathaniel: Importance of keeping bump steering parameters safe
Jacob: Ride frequency response seems a little high
<questions from zoom>
Carter
Nathaniel: Bearing over a bushing?
Nathaniel: How many degrees of misalignment can it have
Jacob: Are the cone spacers necessary?
Jacob: He said something about one of the graphs looking bad. Ask him.
Jonathan + Manas
Philip: Need a method to adjust toe and camber. You should look into that. We don’t want to be expected to manufacture everything
Nathaniel: Eccentric Bolts will help with ^
Nathaniel: Had this cool idea with tracking a string around the wheels of 4 wheel car. Helped him measure something idk.
Philip: Thinks aluminum is fine for trailing arm.
Philip: How are the tubes manufacturable?
Nathaniel: Gotta make sure those tubes are capable of holding up in all the different forces that will be applied.
Oliver
Philip: How do your design goals go together? Light design vs. manufacturable design are goals, the tubular control arms etc. are solutions. Philip wants more justification for why we are making the decisions like using steel.
Philip: Would rotate the orientation of rod ends. He had many reasons for this idea, ask him.
Philip: Do we really need to outsource apex?
Nathaniel: Mild steel vs “gremali” idk if that’s what he said. He says welding gremali is worse, but is probably what you want.
Jacob: Retaining rings for keeping spherical bearings in? Nathaniel also commented on this
Chris had many comments through the zoom call.
Steering
Evan
Tanu: Tie Rod leverage, forgetting a parameter in rack selection. Rack speed is not the single determining factor in steering ratio. Tanu can help you derive this. TEXT HIM
William
Chris: Comments over zoom call
Parra: Insert should be through hole, not manufacturable and pressure problem
Joshua
Parra: What is the point of a gearbox if we’re just maintaining 1:1
Nathaniel: If we want the gearbox to be flexible, we need to be fully prepared for how that would affect the housing.
Parra: Key weigh is very close to inner diameter. Bad . Key weigh is fine, just dont make the section so hollow.
Parra: Why tapered roller bearings? It seems way overkill. How heavy is the assembly, seems concerned it might be too heavy
Everyone: What material are the tubes? Perhaps it can be aluminum.
Parra: It seems like we are designing this backwards. We need to figure out the loads everything must stand and then design. He uses the tapered roller bearings as an example of something that is overkill.
Parra: How are we supporting the steering column?
Unsprung
Sami
Parra: Hubs look very hard to machine. Lightning holes are problematic
Parra: We have margin to yield, is camber deflection considered underload. Hub is going to be a pretty big contributor to camber deflection.
Philip: Uprights look hard to manufacture
Parra: Definitely consider just doing lugs for caliper mounting
Jacob: Will need a super long drill bit for steering arm
Jonathan
Sumi
Parra: Why are bearings so close together? It looks like there’s space on the left (on the matrix slide)
Sohan
Parra: Need to couple simulation with hand calcs on cylinder on cylinder contact
Parra: Need to consider more things with brake material. Waterjetting introduces hella micro cracks.
