Introduction and Background - Mellinger

From its ancient arabic origins in 1100 AD to its contemporary uses, the slider crank mechanism has been used everywhere from water pumps to combustion engines (Hassan). The versatility of converting a constant rotational input to a unique linear output allows for a host of engineering opportunities. This project is dedicated to designing and building one such variation of these machines, the quick return mechanism, for grating cheese. The report diarizes the design process, kinematic analysis, MATLAB simulation, manufacturing, motor control, and data acquisition for the quick return mechanism.
