How To Connect a Chromebook To Campus Wi-Fi

Overview

There are primarily (3) Wi-Fi networks available on campus for computers, tablets, and phones to use. The ability to use a Wi-Fi network depends on your current affiliation with the University:

utexas

  • Current UT Austin faculty, staff, and students whose device supports connecting to a 5 GHz Wi-Fi network.

  • None other than hardware requirements. This network requires modern Wi-Fi capabilities that support Wi-Fi 6e (5 GHz). If your computer only works with 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi networks then you need to use the “eduroam” network.

eduroam

  • This network is for visiting faculty, staff, and students from other institutions that participate in the “eduroam” program. Visitors should consult with their own University’s tech support group for the proper username/password to use when connecting to this network.

  • UT Austin faculty, staff, and students can use this network if for whatever reason the “utexas” network does not work for them such as a computer that does not have hardware that is compatible with the “utexas” Wi-Fi network.

  • None

utguest

  • This network is for visitors and guests that are not a current UT Austin faculty, staff, or student.

  • UT Austin employees should not use this network and should use “utexas” or “eduroam”.

  • Bandwidth is throttled

  • Access to some UT services containing business data is blocked and won’t be accessible at all

  • Current UT Austin employees that try to access a UT service such as email while connected to this network will have their computer blocked from all campus Wi-Fi networks.
