Computer Health Checks

Computer Health Checks

Objective

LAITS will conduct Health Checks on all devices brought to our Service Desks as a routine procedure and preventative measure for computer issues. We would like to detect and address issues before they can interrupt the work of faculty and staff.

Procedure

Health Checks will be looking for the following:

  • If the device is properly enrolled in our management software

  • If the device name and asset tag match our records

  • If the device has open quarantine tickets

  • If CrashPlan is actively backing up your files

  • If software or firmware updates are pending

  • If there is physical damage to the device’s hardware

  • The device’s battery health

Software that is not up to date can put the device at risk of quarantine from the utexas network. When a device is quarantined, it will be barred from connecting to the utexas Wi-Fi and wired network after 7 to 30 days. Quarantines can only be removed once all flagged vulnerabilities are remediated by a LAITS Desktop Support Specialist.

We also want to detect and prevent potential hardware issues (such as sound and external displays not working) by installing the latest firmware updates available and inspecting for any physical damages or flaws such as missing keys or screen cracks.
