Glossary
Accessibility— Ensuring accessibility refers to design and development with the goal of enabling access by people with disabilities to provide them with equal access to information and functionality.
Alt Text—Alt text is the descriptive text that screen readers will read to visually impaired users. It will also show up in the place of an image if a user has images turned off in the browser window. Alt text is a critical element to meeting web accessibility guidelines.
Analytics—Analytics refer to the metrics used to examine user behavior on a website and whether or not content on the site is meeting its goals.
Content contributor—Content contributors are individuals who update various webpages, with the oversight of a content owner.
Content Management System—A content management system, or CMS, is an interface through which content editors can update content. The LBJ core website uses the Drupal CMS.
Content Owner— Content owners are the individuals responsible for oversight of a particular section of the website, acting as a subject matter expert—particularly with regard to accuracy and keeping the information up to date.
Hero Image—A hero image is the prominent image that appears across the browser window on some webpages; e.g., the homepage and level one landing pages.
Keywords—Keywords are search terms for which the school should appear in search engine results; e.g., public policy or public affairs.
LBJ Core Website— The LBJ core website is defined technically as the pages that share a common code base on the UTweb hosting platform. The pages were agreed upon by the web team and executive leadership that take priority with regard to the business goals of the LBJ School
Metadata—Metadata, including page titles and page descriptions, are used to accurately describe a webpage and make it easier for a search engine to parse that page’s relevance to a search term.
Search Engine Optimization—Search engine optimization, or SEO, refers to the process of maximizing a website’s ability to appear high on the list of results returned by a search engine, such as Google or Bing.
Sitemap—A sitemap is a model of all of a website’s content, accurately representing the pages within a hierarchical structure reflecting the site’s navigation.
User testing/Usability—Usability refers to the ability of a user to accomplish his or her required tasks with relative ease. User testing can include a number of methods through which to assess that usability.
Web Steering Committee— The Steering Committee provides guidance to support the maintenance of quality and continued effectiveness of the LBJ core website. It will also consider existing sites related to the LBJ School and make recommendations toward alignment with the LBJ and UT brand.
