Appendix E: What WEG Reads

Appendix E: What WEG Reads

Reading is a frequent and necessary part of being in graduate school and in the Webber Energy Group. We read scientific literature to better inform and position our own work, news outlets to stay informed about the world around us, general interest articles to broaden our horizons, and a host of other blogs, books, and briefs to keep life interesting and stoke our curiosity. But sometimes reading can feel like a chore, and it can be hard to know where to start when looking for relevant, informative outlets.

Below are some different examples of sources, both for research and for fun, that webber group members regularly read. Some people like to read a little bit every day while others' habits are a bit more sporadic. Certain outlets might lend themselves more to regularity (like newspapers) or to isolated deep dives (like journal articles when working on a literature review), but your pace is up to you. Either way, it is important to make sure that your sources are diverse, trustworthy, and balanced (left/right, domestic/international, local/state/national, etc...). Establishing good habits now will help you in your graduate school career as you begin to author your own articles and work on a thesis or dissertation, and it will also lay a strong foundation for wherever life takes you after WEG. Happy reading!
