5) Relationship With Your Colleagues

5) Relationship With Your Colleagues

This section was written by past and current WEG group members to express our enthusiasm for group connections and to provide suggestions for creating a pleasant office environment.

We strive to be highly group-oriented:

We seek to support each other in research efforts by providing an appropriate level of constructive criticism and appreciation of other members’ work. Attend fellow group member presentations, if possible, for support. We also seek to hang out socially as a group. Members will organize events for the group (past events have included rock climbing, swimming at the Greenbelt, happy hours, and football game seating groups). Getting involved and becoming an active group member creates a more collaborative team and will develop lasting relationships.

One of the best ways to make connections with group members is to spend time in the office. Spending time in the office enables cross-pollination with others and also allows for impromptu interactions with Dr. Webber.

Be conscious and respectful of the shared office space:

  • Feel free to borrow books and supplies, but ask first.
  • Be conscious of noise levels; conduct personal and phone conversations outside the office.
  • The conference table is almost always available for meetings (shared with Dr. Bogard’s research group, who has a regular Friday lunchtime meeting).
  • Keep your desk area respectable and clean.
  • Clean up after yourself in the kitchenette (microwave, fridge, coffee maker. . . ).
  • Do not leave food in the fridge past its prime.
  •  All baked goods should be placed on the counter in the office and announced to the group via email for proper devouring.
  •  Be sure to lock the door if you are the last one out of the office (group members leave expensive personal and UT equipment containing valuable research in the room).
  •  Use your own account on the HPC and keep things in a personal folder on the Mac.
  •  Use the group printer wisely. It can print double-sided, so please do so when possible.
  •  If you cancel your scheduled research office hours time on the Google Calendar, email the group so others can sign up for it. The Google Calendar is discussed in Section 12.1.2.
  •  Do not spam the group list-serves. The list-serves are discussed in Section 12.1.2.
