L1 Certification Timeline
Note that L1 training and certification in total will take at minimum one to two weeks, depending on BIC workload and schedules. Prompt submission of safety screening information and training documents will help streamline this process.
To obtain L1 Certification for researchers:
1. Submit the MRI Safety Screening Form for Personnel
this must be reviewed and approved by BIC staff
if you have potential MRI contraindications, we will need supporting documentation from your medical providers to ensure your safety
the process of requesting medical documents can take some time, so plan accordingly
2. Submit the BIC MRI Training Request form
3. Download the L1 Packet
Packet found here:
4. Complete the required UT Learn courses
EHS lab safety courses: OH101, OH201, OH202, FF205, OH204, OH241, and OH311
these courses ensure you know how to safely conduct yourself in the BIC spaces, which contain various potential hazards
BIC-MRI courses: BIC-MRI 101A (for 3T Prisma at NHB) and/or BIC-MRI 101B (for 3T Vida at HDB)
Save screenshots of course completion certificates for all the above to attach to your L1 packet
for guidance on how to save a screenshot see this page
5. Complete Human or Preclinical Research requirements
Human Subjects Research:
Save screenshot(s) of the UTRMS IRB screen showing you have been added to the appropriate IRB protocol(s)
Complete the UT Learn course BIC-MRI:102 - MRI Safety Screening Training
required for human subjects researchers to ensure you know how to screen participants for MRI safety for your studies
attach a screenshot of the course completion certificate to your L1 packet
Preclinical Research:
Enroll in the Occupational Health Program (required for phantom and animal research)
Complete the Mandatory Training for Working with Animals (not required for phantom-only studies)
For animal studies, provide confirmation of your IACUC status by attaching a screenshot to your L1 packet
5. Submit the L1 Packet
Ensure all fields are filled and attachments are included
Name the completed packet as your FIRSTNAME_LASTNAME_L1.pdf (e.g. JANE_DOE_L1.pdf)
Email your L1 packet to bic-training@utlists.utexas.edu
BIC staff will review the L1 packet and will reach out if elements are missing
6. In-person Training & Orientation
When your complete L1 packet is submitted, BIC staff will contact you to schedule your in-person L1 training & orientation
In-person L1 training will take about 1 hour and will be at either NHB (Prisma) or HDB (Vida)
7. Certification
When L1 certification is complete, BIC staff will send an email confirmation
L1 users will automatically be granted Zone 1 and 2 access within NHB (3T Prisma) or HDB (3T Vida)
FBS scheduling access will be granted by BIC staff for either the Prisma or Vida and the associated resources (e.g. parking spaces, exam rooms)
