Training

BIC provides training for all personnel who work in or support operations at one of our locations on campus including:

• independent and assisted research activities using our resources,

• for DMS / UTHA clinical staff that will be working in the UT Austin Imaging Center in HDB, and

• for UT / DMS support staff and first responders that assist with Center operations. 

Note that the preclinical imaging systems of the BIC are located within the ARC suite in HDB. Appropriate facility training will also be required.

Note: Training must be requested using the procedures below. Training requests sent through the FBS system are not checked.

BIC offers various levels of training based on the guidelines set forth by the American College of Radiology (ACR):

Level 0 (L0) Status provides basic safety training for any individual who will be working within the footprint of Imaging Center (Zone 2 or higher).

• • L0 training grants a researcher observer status for an imaging study.

  • L0 status is also required for UT / DMS / UTHA support staff (e.g. ITS, Zone Shop, Facilities).

  • L0 trained individuals may not enter the MRI scanner room and cannot assume any responsibilities associated with an MRI study.

MRI Level 1 (L1) Certification is required in order for an individual to work safely around our Siemens 3T or Bruker 7T MRI systems.

• • Researchers require Level 1 certification to assist with an MRI study.

  • L1 training is also required for all staff that provide clinical care or emergency medical / first responder support to the Center’s operations in NHB or HDB.

MRI Level 2 (L2) Certification is required in order for an individual to operate the Siemens 3T or Bruker 7T MRI scanners for research purposes.

• • All research MRI studies require the presence of two (2) certified personnel, an MRI Level 2 Scanner Operator and an MRI Level 1 Scan Assistant (or higher) must be present.

PET/CT and SPECT/CT/PET User Training is required to work safely around our GE Discovery or Mediso NanoScan systems.

Optical Imaging User Training is required to work safely around our Revvity IVIS system.

X-ray Irradiator User Training is required to work safely around our MultiRad 225 or MultiRad 350 systems.

Badge-reader access to our facilities is granted automatically once BIC training or certification has been completed.
