Level 2 Certification
Note that L2 training and certification in total will take at minimum three weeks, depending on BIC workload and schedules. Prompt submission of safety screening information and training documents will help streamline this process.
You cannot complete L2 certification unless you:
are already L1 certified
have completed at least 5 scans as the primary assisting L1
To obtain L2 Certification for researchers:
1. Submit the MRI Safety Screening Form for Personnel
this must be reviewed and approved by BIC staff
if you have potential MRI contraindications, we will need supporting documentation from your medical providers to ensure your safety
the process of requesting medical documents can take some time, so plan accordingly
2. Submit the BIC MRI Training Request form
3. Download the L2 Packet
Packet found here:
4. Complete the required UT Learn courses
EHS lab safety courses: OH101, OH201, OH202, FF205, OH204, OH241, and OH311
these courses ensure you know how to safely conduct yourself in the BIC spaces, which contain various potential hazards
BIC-MRI courses: BIC-MRI 101A (for 3T Prisma at NHB) and/or BIC-MRI 101B (for 3T Vida at HDB)
Save screenshots of course completion certificates for all the above to attach to your L2 packet
for guidance on how to save a screenshot see this page

attach a screenshot of the course completion certificate to your L2 packet
Preclinical Research
Enroll in the Occupational Health Program (required for phantom and animal research)
Complete the Mandatory Training for Working with Animals (not required for phantom-only studies)
For animal studies, provide confirmation of your IACUC status by attaching a screenshot to your L2 packet
5. Submit the L2 Packet
Ensure all fields are filled and attachments are included
Name the completed packet as your FIRSTNAME_LASTNAME_L2.pdf (e.g. JANE_DOE_L2.pdf)
Email your L2 packet to bic-training@utlists.utexas.edu
BIC staff will review the L2 packet and will reach out if elements are missing
