Conclusion
In the end, the mechanism functioned properly and turned rotational motion into translational motion. Using a laser cutter proved to be much quicker and effective than by hand and materials were relatively cheap. However, after creating the mechanism and having to resort to using a counter-weight to allow proper movement of the mechanism it is apparent that modifications to the design can be made.
Future Work
If I wanted to purely demonstrate rotational motion turning into translational motion, I would have created another slotted link and have that link be stationary with a circular slider. However, I had the end goal of supporting a pestle with the slider and I needed space between the slider walls to fit a mortar. Using thicker wood and scaling up the size of the links would have proved useful as it would have supported a greater load. Wood that is too thick would have prevented the use of a laser cutter to create links. So another solution to increase supported load would be creating an identical five-bar slotted slider mechanism and putting the two in conjunction to support the rod connected to the slider. This would allow a heavier load to be supported on the slider.
