Additional Jobs
Faculty Additional Employment refers to work performed beyond a faculty member’s regular appointment (or existing contract for Professional-Track faculty) within the academic domains of teaching, research, or service. Common types include Academic Activities and Instructional Overload. Compensation depends on the specific circumstances of both the faculty member and the work.
Faculty may perform additional work for their primary department or an external department or college. If the work is for an external unit, that unit is responsible for processing the related appointment and compensation. Faculty holding multiple faculty appointments across units must maintain the same rank and base salary in all roles.
The guidance on this page applies only to current UT Austin faculty performing work related to their faculty roles for a UT Austin CSU. For other scenarios, refer to the following:
Work for external employers: Treated as Outside Professional Activities. See Texas Research: Outside Professional Activities: Request Prior Approval.
Faculty with Academic A&P staff roles: See Staff with Additional Employment. Approvals route through APS, not HR.
Tenured/Tenure-track faculty on sponsored projects: See Release Time (Leave From the Instructional Budget).
Non-faculty employees (including postdocs) teaching organized courses:: See Hiring non-faculty employees to teach.
12-month research faculty teaching organized courses: See COE: Hiring research faculty to teach.
