EID Password Change
Who will be required to change their password?
Anyone who has not changed their UT EID password since November 2015 will need to change their password. If you are required to change your password, you will receive an email notification from the Information Security Office (ISO) in advance. If you are not sure if you have changed your password in the last three years, we recommend that you change your password now. Â
When will the password change campaign take place?
Current Faculty will begin receiving notifications on April 1st, followed by a second notice on April 9th. Current Faculty will be required to change their password beginning April 16th, 2019. The university is not extending the deadline or granting exceptions to this campaign.
If your password is not updated, your EID will be locked and you will not be able to access certain UT services or applications. Â
What are the UT EID password requirements?
The current EID password rules can be found here. The EID password requirements have recently changed making it easier for you to create a new password, including the use of passphrases. A passphrase is a longer password composed of a sentence or a combination of words. Passphrases are longer, which makes them harder to guess but easier to remember because you can choose a sentence or phrase that's memorable to you.Â
The following password requirements apply:
- must be between 12 and 32 characters in length
- must contain at least two of the following: letters, numbers, and special characters. Spaces are permitted as special characters. The other special characters that are permitted are ! @ # $ % & * ( ) - + = , < > : ; " ' . (PLEASE NOTE: The Virtual Private Network (VPN) does not allow double quotation marks (") in passwords. If you use the VPN, do not include double quotations (") in your password.)
- cannot contain the UT EID
- cannot contain the birthday in any form
- cannot contain the first, middle, or last name
- any words or character combinations found in a list of common passwords that are considered insecure. Words in this list are not allowed even when you use symbols to represent letters (for example, @ for a, ! for i, or zero for O)
- may contain spaces. However, there may not be a space as the first or last character.Â
