LBJ School-Specific Info

  • Always reference the school as “the LBJ School of Public Affairs” on first mention.
    • “LBJ School” is acceptable on second.
    • “The school” can be used further into body copy.
  • Never capitalize “the” in “the LBJ School of Public Affairs” mid-sentence.
  • Never use punctuation in school degree abbreviations: MPAff, MGPS, EMPL
    • The LBJ School’s master’s programs are:
      • “Master of Public Affairs”
      • “Master of Global Policy Studies”
      • “Executive Master in Public Leadership” (NOTE the “in”)
    • The programs’ full names should be used on first reference, with abbreviations appropriate on second mention.
  • Dual degree programs should be referred to as such, with no hyphen; use “dual degree programs” mid-sentence.
    • “The dual degree program with MPAff and Law is a four-year program.”
    • “The student is pursuing dual degrees in public affairs and law.”
  • When referring to degree specializations, the word “specialization” should not be capitalized unless it is part of the name of a formal specialization.
    • CORRECT: “LBJ School students may declare a formal specialization.”
    • CORRECT: “The International Affairs Specialization prepares students for foreign policy careers.”
    • CORRECT: “The specialization in international affairs provides coursework in cross-cultural aspects of policy problems.”
  • “Portfolio programs” should not be capitalized mid-sentence. “Portfolio” should be capitalized when part of the formal name of the portfolio program, but “program” should not.
    • CORRECT: “The LBJ School offers a number of portfolio programs for degree customization.”
    • Refer to the Graduate School’s website to find each portfolio program’s proper name. 

DC Concentration

  • The Washington Program should be referred to as “DC Concentration: MPAff/MGPS”
    • On second reference, “DC Concentration” is appropriate
  • The unique work experience that DC Concentration students engage is referred to as a “policy apprenticeship.”
  • DC Concentration students are referred to as LBJ DC Fellows
  • The general LBJ presence in Washington, DC, should be referred to as “the LBJ Washington Center”
    • EXAMPLE: “The Washington Program: DC Concentration is offered through the LBJ Washington Center in Washington, DC”
