Stuck Group III Shutter

Stuck Group III Shutter

  • Improvements needed: Cooling water interlock setpoint and heating chiller need more explanation. Fling Ga as well. How hot can we take chiller? High how can we take cell and substrate for this? What's the best way to prevent In drippage from touching cooling panel? There's a gap in procedure between 5 minute break and adjusting the shutter-- what happens if it doesn't work?

For Gallium

  1. Raise cooling water interlock setpoint to >35C.

  2. Heat up chiller to 30C.

  3. GENTLY jiggle shutter to see if it's free

    • Heat chiller more if necessary, don't use force!

  4. Open/close shutter a few times to fling Ga off shutter.

  5. If steps 3 and 4 do not work, go to the bathroom for 5 minutes and return.

  6. Readjust shutter positions (open/closed) to compensate, so that shutter won't get stuck again.

  7. Check every couple weeks visually and by hand to see if sticking is occurring (SRB: yes, do this).

For Indium

  1. Raise cooling water interlock setpoint to >35C.

  2. Heat up chiller to 30C

  3. Heat up In cell to 1000C

  4. Remove block from substrate heater and face it toward the In cell

  5. Heat up substrate heater in manual mode to 25% power (~580C TC)

  6. GENTLY wiggle shutter.

    • Heat cell and substrate more if necessary, don't use force!

    • It helps to wait ~30 sec to warm up with In shutter mostly closed.

    • Do not let shutter/In drippage touch cooling panel.

  7. Hope that In melts and drips off

  8. If steps 6 and 7 do not work, go to the bathroom for 5 minutes and return.

  9. Readjust shutter positions (open/closed) to compensate, so that shutter won't get stuck again.

  10. Check every couple weeks visually and by hand to see if sticking is occurring (SRB: yes, do this).

For Aluminum

  1. Get SRB, will try to use force to fix (won't work, shutter will break).

  2. Order new Al charge, crucible, and shutter.

  3. Grow everything that doesn't require Al.

  4. Open.

Notes:

  1. The values of temperature (for Indium) seem to be on the low end... as the process was slow.

  2. Sticking shutters are a huge issue as the shutter could fall/shear off, if it gets stuck enough.

  3. Don't use force to dislodge -- get SRB if force appears to be necessary!
