2D Contours

This operation follows line work to mill a cut fully through a flat-sheet of stock.

  • Flat-Sheet Milling
  • Pocket Clearing

2.5D Contours

This operation removes material from the stock block until all that remains is the mesh model.

2-Flute Flat-End-Mill Bit

AKA: Roughing Bit, Milling Bit

Flat-end bits are designed to cut a singular plane of material using the side of the bit.

These bits are not designed to drill downwards, and would require a ramp or spiral approach.

Approved uses

  • Roughing pass on wood and foam materials.
  • Step-topography operations on wood and foam materials.

  • Maximum Optimal Load or Step-Over Distance:
How much material does the bit overlap from pass to pass?
    • Wood: Up to 35% of bit diameter. 1/2" bit would require a 0.225" step-over or less.
    • Foam: Up to 75% of bit diameter. 1/2" bit would require a 0.375" step-over or less.
  • Maximum Step-Down:
How much material does the bit remove per-layer?
    • Wood: Up to 35% of bit diameter. A 1/2" bit would require a 0.20" step-over or less.
    • Foam: Up to 75% of bit diameter. A 1/2" bit would require a 0.375" step-over or less.

4-Flute Ball-Nose Bit

AKA: Finishing Bit, Contours Bit

Ball-nose bits are designed for drilling and milling both.

Great for topography and fine detail 2.5D contouring.

Approved uses

  • Finishing pass on wood and foam materials.

Prohibited Application

  • Roughing pass on wood materials.
    • This bit is not intended to remove bulk materials such as wood and will result in damage to equipment or the operator if improperly utilized.

    • Wood: Up to 20% of bit diameter. A 1/2" bit would require a 0.125" step-over or less.
    • Foam: Up to 75% of bit diameter. A 1/2" bit would require a 0.375" step-over or less.

V-Groove Bit

AKA: Engraving Bit, Etching Bit

V-groove bits come in many different degrees, the school offers 45° and 90° options for checkout

Often used for carving, engraving, and sign design operations.

Approved uses

  • Finishing pass on wood materials.
